The Chautauqua Institute
The Chautauqua Institute is located on
Chautauqua Lake in New York. It is a summer
community that encompasses the arts, education,
religion, and recreation - "a place removed" from
the day to day world where some of our greatest
thinkers of our time come to speak regarding today's
issues; a place where music, dance, opera, theater,
visual arts and even sailing draws 100,000 people
each summer. It was founded in 1874 as a training
camp for Sunday school teachers.
Even off season, people live on grounds all year long
and the Grand Dame, Athenaeum Hotel, build in 1881 is open all year long. One of my
favorite places is The Hall of Philosophy, the 4000 seat Amphithearter for such
events as an evening of the ballet and famous entertainers. Pictured here is the
Fowler-Kellogg Art Center - which is a school of art as well as a gallery. I have
exhibited my art at The Chatauqua Institution.
To just be surrounded by the life long learning, nature and meditation is so inspirational..
you feel alive. The lake is lovely and just perfect for sailing. Even off season, as
was my visit this past weekend - leaves me filled with life.
The Chautauqua Institution is a festival for the mind, body and spirit.
Right now is a wonderfully marvelous time to drive over - the leaves beckon. ~~
