"Making Encaustic Medium
I , like so many artists, enjoy the
ease of using already made encaustic
medium purchased from one of the
trusted encaustic paint companies.
But, when using large amounts of
medium it is really much more cost
effective to make your own.
Basically. . . . . Demar Resin + Beeswax .
The demar resin is a type of hardened tree sap and comes in crystal form .
I used an ordinary food scale for my measurements. And, in preparation, I
also did a good bit of reading materials from some of our well known encasutic
artists . Yesterday, I used a formula of 2 oz if Resin to 1 # of beeswax. I do
know that using too much resin will result in medium that is too brittle.
After using this formula, I may find that I need to make some adjustments to the
finished medium.
Pigments, as most of you know can be added to make encaustic paints. I am
not sure if I will try that route or not. There are beautiful colors and shades of
ready made paints that I have used in my art such as R & F Handmade Paints,
Enkaustikos and very inviting duochrome colors which I adore using from
Evans Encaustics .
If any one has any suggestions, ideas or questions, I would love to hear from you.
Happy Art Days to all of you.
